Hmm. Well, I tend to be pretty shy when faced with new people, I take refuge in being polite. It can take me ages to make friends but I'm a lot better now than I used to be - for almost all of my first year at seconday school, I had no friends to hang out with and spent every lunchtime on my own in the library. It takes someone with a talkative personality to get me talking back, I guess.
Er, as to benefits? I suppose if people can't get to know you, they can't know what'll hurt you the most. On the flipside, you've got no one to share anything with, no one to bounce off and no one just to give you a hug when you need it and boy, that really sucks.
