Writer's Block: Study break

[Error: unknown template qotd]
I'm currently studying for a BA in Classics at the University of Wales, Trinity Saint David. It involves much Latin and Ancient Greek and is therefore perfect for me. Sadly I don't get any choice on my modules next year - my languages are compulsory and I also need to do 'Research Methods' and something called the 'Classics Project' which apparently is a mini dissertation. I have no idea what I'm going to do for either that or my actual dissertation as yet.

I want to teach Latin when I finish my course so that means taking a PGCE as well. People keep saying there aren't any jobs for Latin teachers but I've definitely seen some about so I'm confident that I will be able to continue doing what I love in future.

That sounds like fun...I have taken several years of Latin and I love it. This semester I will be taking an advanced class.
I like Ancient Greek as well, but I have only just started taking that.

I really enjoy it :) I've been studying Latin since I was 11 and it's a massive part of me now, I couldn't imagine not doing it. I started Ancient Greek during my last year of school and continued that at uni too, I'm sure you'll come to love that too :D

Well, I am still in high school! Shocker, huh? I am a senior though, and am going to take take my second year of Greek. Yeh, I have been studying Latin since I was a little younger than eleven, probably nine? But yeh, at first I was just all "meh" about it, but now...I love it.

It's awesome that you get to study both languages at your high school! I think it's kind of rare here unless your school is a grammar school or supposed to be all prestigious but I've heard that more schools want to introduce Latin into their curriculum which would be awesome because that might encourage more people to love it. Will you continue with them after school?

[identity profile] faelariel.livejournal.com 2011-08-07 06:35 pm (UTC)(link)
Um...we are not supposed to be all prestigious but we are a private classical Christian school, so yeh, big on the classic part.
Yes, I have heard that too, Latin is getting popular now, and people are jumping on the bandwagon. :)
I hope to conitinue both after school, because I love them and I want to pursue a more classic and "humanities" type degree.
So what do you translate now?

[identity profile] touchmy12inch.livejournal.com 2011-08-07 06:43 pm (UTC)(link)
I see! And it's really nice that you might continue with them :) My dad was a bit wary at first of me doing my Classics degree but it's much more important to do what you enjoy.

This past year in my Latin classes we translated most of the first book of De Bello Gallico and then some select letters from Ovid's Heroides. My Greek class was an intermediate one so we only did one set text, a defence speech by Lysias. I'm not sure what we'll be doing next year though.

I think we shall be translating some more of Caesar this year. And some from the poets--Ovid, Horace, etc. Perhaps the Vulgate...
When I took my previous Latin class we had to translate Vergil's Aeneid.
That was pretty cool. We did not translate ALL of it, because we did not have the time, but about 1000 lines or so.
Good thing you got to do what you wanted. :)

[identity profile] touchmy12inch.livejournal.com 2011-08-07 07:11 pm (UTC)(link)
We did a bit of the Aeneid for my A-level, from Book 1, certainly not all of it because there wasn't time for us either, haha, and we had to do Caesar and Ovid, those are apparently very popular!

[identity profile] faelariel.livejournal.com 2011-08-07 08:27 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, we did from Book 1, 2, 3, 6, 8, and the last book.
Yeah, tell me about it.
Uh, btw what's with the username?

[identity profile] touchmy12inch.livejournal.com 2011-08-09 01:03 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh that's quite a bit more than me, haha.

Aaah and the username is sort of an in-joke more than anything else, I know it's always kind of weird when you see it for the first time XD

[identity profile] faelariel.livejournal.com 2011-08-10 06:43 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, we spent a year on it, so...
:)
Yeah, when I saw it I was like o.O
Heheh.

[identity profile] touchmy12inch.livejournal.com 2011-08-10 10:13 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah I don't think we ever spent quite that long on it XD

I like your username btw, it's very pretty!

[identity profile] faelariel.livejournal.com 2011-08-10 11:22 pm (UTC)(link)
Hahah!

Thank you, I made it up for the lead elven character in my book! (She'd kind of like me, so...I used it for myself as well!)

[identity profile] touchmy12inch.livejournal.com 2011-08-11 05:37 pm (UTC)(link)
Aah, I see :) I was going to ask if it means anything in particular XD Good luck with the book btw!

[identity profile] faelariel.livejournal.com 2011-08-11 06:37 pm (UTC)(link)
Hey thanks! It's a long ongoing process. :)
